“It is not the mountains we conquer but ourselves.” ~Sir Edmund Hillary
We need to learn to get out of our own way sometimes. It is really amazing the things I’ve put off because of fear. I hear job seekers do it too. There is a website called Zen Habits that had a super post listed recently. It is entitled “How to Summit Life’s Everyday Mountains”. The author, Scott Dinsmore, is a mountain climber and he shares advice on how to reach life’s summit! So perfect for the Career Sherpa theme, eh?! Dinsmore uses climbing analogies to make his point. Here are a couple of my favorite, but you should read the entire post here!
Here is to a great week of climbing to the summit, whatever your summit might be.

Hi Hannah, Thought-provoking! I was showing my husband random videos on Facebook last night. Most were the sharing type but the last one was a video of a whitewater paddling friend whose other passion is climbing. In the summer, she rock climbs and in the winter, she ice climbs. (and she’s my age, 50+) The video was shot as she led others up this sheer straight cliff. All you could see most of the video is her hands carefully placing the pegs into the rock face and tying the belaying ropes to it. Now and then you could see a shot of how much further she had to go and a shot of the ground. I think the camera was on her helmet.
We’ve talked about the level of trust you have to have in the belaying partners when you climb. The wrong person and you plummet, perhaps to your death. You definitely need that support team and your author is right in drawing parallels to life.
As I have reread your quotes several times, I can’t help but think backwards in my own life and the trying times climbing, the support team I have had, and the many times I have needed that reserve energy.
Thank you for making me think!
Julie,
Yes! The trust component to belaying is a wonderful analogy! You wouldn’t trust just anyone to be your support.
Thank you so much for your thoughts. There are so many life lessons to learn from job search and parallels to be drawn. Many thanks for sharing!
