If you are new to LinkedIn, you may wondering how you can find people to add to your LinkedIn connections. LinkedIn provides three ways to easily identify people to add to your network:
- People you may know
- Colleagues
- Classmates
In this video (less than 5 minutes), I take you on a guided tour of these three options so you know where they are and how to use them.
The message behind this post is that you want to connect and expand your network. No, not just for the sake of it, but to purposefully connect with people that you know would add value. The post I reference in the beginning of this video “How to find “Great” People to Connect With” might also generate some ideas.
Most people can play around with LinkedIn and figure some of this out. Some need more hand holding. There are tons and tons of resources.

Hi Hannah,
I really enjoyed the session on networkng you gave at the RPL this past Saturday. I was just checking out the LinkedIn presentation on your website. And I have a question. I realize LinkedIn has the “canned” how you might know people categories, though I’ve found some people I’ve gotten to know because we have volunteered at/for/with something in some cases for a number or years. I was wondering how you would feel it best to link to such individuals, collegue I typically use for people I’ve worked with professionally.

I think it is perfectly ok to ask people you’ve volunteered with to connect on LinkedIn. Just be sure to explain why you want to connect in your invitation through LinkedIn. I think the best choice for category “how do you know them” would be friend. Colleague requires you to state at which company and that may not be listed on both of your profiles. Hope this helps.
